10 Things You Should Consider Before Purchasing A Diamond

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

diamonds have long been used in fine jewelry designs and are treasured today, especially in our most coveted type of jewelry - the engagement ring. This precious gem is expensive, and there are many things to consider before buying any type of diamond jewelry.

Here are 10 things you should think about before purchasing a diamond:

1. Finances. Before you buy a diamond, think about if you really can afford it. Even though every man wants to buy his fiancé a 5 carat diamond ring, it would be unwise to charge it on his credit card if he does not have the means to pay for it.

2. Determine the kind of diamond that he or she wants to purchase. Is a small one ok, or is it size you are going for? Remember a smaller diamond of better quality may be worth more than a larger diamond of less quality.

3. Choose the store. To be sure that you are getting what you pay for, it would be best if one purchases their diamonds from known dealers of gemstone jewelry. Since online purchases for diamonds are available, check first if they are real dealers.

4. Certification. Real diamonds are certified. Make sure to look for a certificate before buying one.

5. Determine the carat of preferred diamond to be purchased. Most jewelry stores offer the most sought-after carat, from 0.5 to 2 carat ones. Also they are priced according to such standards.

6. Determine the color grade. If one wants to purchase a bigger diamond at a much lesser price, one only has to choose those that have much lower color grades.

7. One or several stoned ring. A 1.5 carat solitaire diamond is more expensive than another one that has 6 stones at 0.25 carat each. This is due to the fact that larger diamonds are much harder to find.

8. The shape. diamonds are cut in square, marquises, oval or pear shaped ones. The last three shapes are the ones that make a diamond look much larger than it actually is.

9. Choose the color. A colorless diamond is much more expensive than one that has slight colorations. Some prefer slight colorations to give it a more subtle touch of flair.

10. In the end, what really makes a purchase satisfying depends on ones standards. If an individual would be much happier with a 0.5 carat diamond than a 5 carat one (for the simplists), go ahead purchase one, even if he or she can afford 5 carat ones.

Some Helpful Tips To Help You Choose The Perfect Watch For The Man In Your Life

Exactly how casual is your husband, boyfriend, or other man in your life? The watch you choose for him should reflect who he is as a person. If the man in your life is stylish and trendy, you must pick a watch that follows suit. If he is casual at both his job and at home, choose a watch with an informal look. If he is heavily into sports, pick a watch that suits his needs. Regardless, you must choose a watch that is both a match to his personality and a match to his desires.

Any man should have a watch suitable to work and home environments. If the man in your life works in a casual environment, one watch will usually suffice. You may find he wants two regardless in case one watch becomes damaged.

Sports watches are generally lower in cost than casual or formal watches. The design on this type of watch is also different. For the most part, sports watches are all about function. They need the stop watch for timing, and often have other functions such as diving depths, a compass, temperature reading, and even pitching speed readers. The Omega Seamaster is perhaps the fanciest of the sports watches. With night vision, tachometers, compass, and other fancy tools, it is a watch for any aspiring super sleuth.

When shopping for a classy watch, look for stainless steel straps. They are stronger than a traditional leather strap. Additionally, they are dressy enough for the office, but casual enough for home. Stainless steel does not rust, and it is water resistant. Speaking of water resistance, waterproof watches are also popular. However, only divers will really swim with their watch on, so this is an option you may not need.

If you have the money, gold or gold plating is an option. Gold watchbands are extremely expensive, however, and may attract unwanted attention from thieves.

The actual part of the watch that contains the digital or analog time reading can come in all shapes and sizes. Large men need to don a watch that does not appear too tiny compared to their wrist. For this reason, smaller watch faces can look rather feminine on plus sized men. Many watch faces are oversized, a new trend, and can actually be very suitable on most men. You must base the size of the watch face on the span of the wrist for a watch to look good.

Finally, watches and their bands come in a variety of colors. Some even come with favored sports teams, cartoon characters, or car manufacturers. Choose a color that is suitable to your needs. Obviously, a cartoon themed watch is not going to be appropriate in a corporate setting, save a watch of this nature for home use.

By following a few simple guidelines, the watch that you pick out for the man in your life will give a lasting impression. Think of his likes and personal style when making your selection.

Should You Give Her A Diamond Ring For Christmas?

diamond rings are the most intimate gifts men can possibly buy for their women. The phrase diamonds are forever holds. diamonds, birthed in fire, in the molten rock in earth's core were formed millions of years ago. The diamond set in that diamond ring is millions (possibly billions) of years old. That's as close as forever as you can get.

The heat that creates the diamond can even exceed 1,200 degrees Celsius. Anything less than 400 degrees Celsius results in graphite, not diamond. Talk about heat. It corresponds to the heat, the passion in a romance. The heat of love. Hence, that diamond set in a ring given by a man to his woman expresses his love, his passion for her.

If those are your intentions, go ahead and buy the ring. If she is a platonic friend, think twice about it as she might get the wrong message.

Basically, when a man gives a woman a diamond ring, he is telling her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. That he loves her. So if your intention is to propose marriage to her and you are sure she loves you too, then please, do buy her a real diamond ring. Anything less would disappoint her once she finds out. It would seem like a fake diamond to her, implying your love for her is false. She might still accept your proposal and shrug off the fact that the rock in the ring is an imitation diamond, but it would probably make her feel less than the best.

If you are married treat your spouse to a diamond ring for your wedding anniversary. That is, if you can afford it. She wouldn't appreciate it if you land both of you in huge debt just to get her that ring. For a special wedding anniversary gift, nothing beats one of these rings.net/3-stone-diamond-princess-cut-ring.htm>3 stone diamond princess cut ring for oomph, if you have the money for it, that is.

Another way is to choose a loose diamond and have it set. That's a popular way to go when you pick a diamond engagement ring. This way, you can tailor the ring the way you want it to be. Pick a diamond within your budget and a setting she would love. Since the price of a diamond is determined by the four Cs, carat, Color, Clarity and Cut, by playing around with these factors, you get maximum bang for your buck.

Let's start with carat, or the weight (size) of the diamond. Typically, women like their engagement rings to hold diamonds as large as you can afford. If she's not a perfectionist, you can compromise slightly on clarity and color to get a larger diamond. You might even get an SI1 diamonds with a J color so you can afford a higher carat diamond.

Now here's a trick you can use to get the best in terms of carat weight. There is a price jump at every 0.5 carat increase in weight. It is all to do with marketing. A 1 carat stone sounds more impressive than a 0.93 carat stone, so although visibly , you can't tell the difference, the 1 carat diamond would cost a lot more than what that 0.07 carat increase might be worth. Likewise, the jump between a 0.49 carat diamond and a 0.5 carat diamond is substantial. A 2.4 carat diamond might look as big as a 2.5 carat diamond yet the price jump is more than linear. Instead of a 2.5 carat stone, you could pick a 2.4 carat stone which looks at big but costs a lot less.

Next decide on the clarity of the diamond you want. diamond Clarity indicates the extent of flaws, if any, in a diamond. If she is a perfectionist, she might prefer a smaller diamond with highher clarity. If she wants it as large as possible but is not too concerned about the flaws in the diamond, you could compromise on the clarity to get a bigger diamond.

The cut of the diamond also affects its worth. http://www.alljewelry.info/diamondcut.php tells you what the cut of the diamond is all about.

An Online Jewelry Shop is One of the Best Ways to Purchase an Engagement Ring

Not everyone has the balls to buy an engagement ring from an online jewelry shop. After all, there are some sacrifices that must be made when shopping online versus a brick and mortar store. Not to mention, a little faith and some good luck.

When you buy an engagement ring at a brick and mortar store, one of the biggest advantages is that you get to actually see the selection of rings in person. You can examine them up close and personal as well as make comparisons between various rings. Typically there will be a salesperson providing you with some knowledge and information about the diamonds, so you don't feel like a fish out of water. Once you select a ring, you can have it in your grubby little paws just minutes after putting it on your charge card. Should something go wrong with the ring, you can make a fast trip back to the store to get it examined and possibly repaired.

So given all these advantages, why would anyone buy at an online jewelry shop? The biggest reason to buy online is that you will save thousands of dollars. online jewelry shops don't have to pay for expensive overhead and are able to pass the savings on to you. Also, you don't pay for taxes on the ring, which will save you hundreds of dollars. If you're like my husband, you don't want any salespeople around putting undue pressure on you to make a purchase beyond your budget. You can avoid having to interact with others, by shopping online.

As with shopping at a brick and mortar store, one make still take precautions. Read the fine print and carefully review the return policy. Make sure they offer a long enough period (i.e. 30 days) for you to know whether the ring is a keeper. Purchase diamonds that are GIA or AGS certified and avoid ones that are not. Check out the ring retailer on the Better Business Bureau. Look at whether anyone has made complaints against the retailer and whether the complaint has been resolved. Finally, make sure the online ring retailer offers a sufficient method of insurance to ensure that you will be covered, should the ring get lost on its way to you.

For great deals from reputable online jewelry shops checkout Blue Nile, one of the best online jewelry stores out there. Also look into Mondera, which has earned rave reviews from customers and those in the know.

Vintage Watches: How Conservation, Restoration or Refurbishment Affects Values

There's an ongoing debate in museum circles about the ethics of conservation and restoration of what is categorised as Technological Heritage. watches fit into this category, and while we may scoff at armchair academic pronouncements on how we should go about maintaining our collections, it's worth more than a thought.

The vintage watch market seems to operate not so much on the ethics of conservation, restoration and preservation of historical integrity, but on the economics of supply and demand as it applies to conserved, restored and indeed refurbished technology. In many cases it's 'opinion' that informs the choice of what to do with a vintage watch and while there are as many opinions as there are people, some opinions carry more weight financially than others.

Perhaps not so strangely, the high end of the market, often represented by prices fetched at Antiquorum, Christies, Sothebys and others, reflects a decided bias towards conservation and restoration over refurbishment. On rarer high-end timepieces originality attracts premium prices, while refurbished high-end watches are much less in demand.

So first let's arrive at a working definition of conservation, restoration and refurbishment so as to at least have a set of benchmarks upon which we may base our restoration decisions.

conservation

A concept of conservation emerged about a decade and a half ago in respect to vintage technology and is beginning to have an impact on the serious horological markets. It basically argues that emphasis should be placed on preservation of originality for the future and that making vintage technology appear pristine and never used is analogous to vandalism.

The idea behind conservation is that all changes to the object should be reversible. Take dials for example: If one was to take the conservation line when working on a vintage dial, refinishing the dial would be out of the question, but stabilising it with a protective layer of lacquer would, as long as the lacquer could be removed at a later time.

The same logic applies to movements. The conservationist would argue that parts should not be replaced because having the technology operating is far less important than preserving its originality.

Here's an example that places technological conservation into a broader context. The Australian War Memorial has a collection of WW2 German military aircraft, and when experts conducted their pre conservation condition survey they identified a grey blue oxide coating on the aircrafts' aluminium. They conditionally identified the type and constituents of the coating and devised a conservation strategy that ensured the original coating was not destroyed.

On similar aircraft in the United States, however, preservation work resulted in the removal of the oxide coating, thus destroying the originality of the technology and giving cause for confusion in scholarly investigation of the future. Many in the field of technological conservation would argue that removing an original coating in order to make the aircraft look new is unethical – same thing for watches and clocks of historical value.

restoratioN

restoration is not identical to conservation. restoration is a process that attempts to return a piece of technology, in our case a timepiece, to a previous state that a given restorer, complete with prejudices, assumptions and opinions about what the object should represent, imagines to be original. restoration is personal to the restorer and that should never be forgotten.

However, in respect to technology, restoration is controversial, since it often involves irreversible changes to the original technology in order to make it work and function as it was meant to function.

With watches and clocks, for example, worn parts are removed, rust is treated, damaged or faded dials are replaced with genuine factory dials, hands are either re-plated or replaced, cases are polished, crystals are changed, seals are replaced etc., etc. Prejudices, assumptions and 'shop practice' come into play here as the restorer applies both an aesthetic logic (visual appeal) and a functional logic (keeping the watch going to a factory standard) when deciding what parts to replace during the restoration.

But if the parts are factory specified, the surfaces of materials are not changed (eg removing some of the copper coating on a 500 series Omega movement through improper use of solvents) and the work carried out on the watch is done according to factory recommendations, then many people would say that is a reasonable standard on which to base restorations of mass-produced watches. Clearly, you would not have an 'original' as defined by conservationists, but you would have preserved the 'integrity' of the piece by keeping it to specifications.

Another aspect of restoration practiced by some restorers is to focus on functional rather than aesthetic restoration. An example of functional restoration is to replace worn parts and stabilise the condition of a watch while maintaining the patina of the piece. This may include a very light polishing of the watch and the use of treatment techniques to arrest further deterioration of the dial and other non-mechanical parts of the watch. This more fully complies with those who argue the ethical and monetary benefits of restoration over refurbishment.

REFURBISHMENT

Refurbishment is the practice of taking a complete piece, or part, of old technology and making it look brand spanking new again. Refurbishment involves removing an object’s past in the belief the new looking is best or that new looking sells.

We see much evidence of refurbishment wherever we look. Old houses rebuilt to look faux grande with more ornamentation than displayed originally; furniture in the brassier antique shops that appears as smooth and new as the IKEA competitor's product down the street; cars of the 50s and 60s chromed to the hilt and modified to reflect modern concepts of a bygone era, and so on.

Like the examples above, a refurbished watch often goes beyond the original factory brief. We see countless examples of Omegas, for example, with all traces of their former lives obliterated by excessive polishing; refinished dials completed with varying degrees of competence and unoriginal dial patterns fresh from the overactive imaginations of dial refinishers; so-called new-old stock beads of rice bracelets (as opposed to originals that have been restored); sharp and shiny crowns replacing otherwise functional and nicely worn ones; the dressing up of some models to look deluxe rather than standard; wrong movements (but, hey, who cares no-one buying a new-old watch will probably look under the bonnet) and numerous other touches that compromise the integrity of the original model.

SO WHAT IS THE STANDARD FOR watches

Let's return to the earlier point on opinion and acknowledge that opinions are simply an expression of personal preference. If we are to build up a reasoned argument that favours one opinion over another in respect to the conservation, restoration or refurbishment of mass-produced watches, then we can choose to look at where opinion converges into a body of knowledgeable practice.

First, there is a market for new-old in any stream of collectibles, and, judging by the mountain of literature written about the new-old segment of various markets, it's usually where intrigued amateurs or freshly minted neophytes land. Refurbished collectibles are generally a sellers market rather than a buyers market, because buyers do not make distinctions other than visual appeal and mythical investment value of vintage collectibles, thus placing themselves at the mercy of sellers - same thing with vintage watches.

In reviewing a large range of books and magazines on horological restoration and analysing academic pronouncements on the conservation of our technological heritage, I believe the following points are worthy of consideration:

conservation is the preferred option for important watches and clocks, particularly those that embody technological innovation. restoration amounts to wanton destruction of heritage.

The more rare the object, the greater the case for conservation over restoration.

In the case of mass-produced watches, restoration is favoured by both the ‘expert’ and the knowledgeable ends of the market. Values are higher for working models that meet fully a manufacturers specifications. In some cases, a watch that has retained all of its original factory assembled parts, even though regulated to compensate for wear, will fetch more than a restored watch that has had replacement parts.

As the vintage watch market has grown both in size and breadth, there is a growing segment that values 'functional' restoration – replacement of worn movement parts and conservation that stabilises non-working parts of a watch.

Refurbishment of part, as opposed to the whole, of a watch is generally preferred by all ends of the market except the new-old segment. Refurbishment is generally seen as an option when there are no other options.

Refurbishment to create a new-old watch has a market for newbies. The prices paid can be high but re-selling values can be severely discounted.

So where do I stand? Put me in the Functional restoration group!

Omega The First Watch Preferred By Astronautians

The most prestigious watch company omega has evolved and sought after brands in the world market. The omega has countered at other companies who boast of delivering timepieces that last a lifetime in the market. The mind-blowing services of omega since 15-year, has been immeasurable. There is in-disreputable service guarantee on repairs and the delivery of spare parts for its watches from the date production is indeed unmatchable. Swiss company is developed in loyalty to its high quality and creative design procedures for each time pieces.

The promising 23-year-old Louis Brandt who assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen at Switzerland in 1848. This made the origin of the Brand watch omega. After terminated from that company, he traveled throughout Europe selling his watches from Italy to Scandinavia by way of England, his chief market place Bienne. His two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar controlled over assembly workshop system in favour of in-house manufacturing and total production control after the death of their father. Aftermath Bienne become the headqurter of Omeag and still is there. Their first series-produced calibres, Labrador and Gurzelen, as well as, the famous omega calibre of 1894, would ensure the brand's marketing success.

It makes new history in 1903. The omega Company was able to produce 240,000 watches annually and employing over 800 people. This ensued was truly incredible. Paul-Emile, also known as the great architect and builder of omega, established the company as a world leader by initiating the merger between omega and Tissot within the group SSIH, Geneva, shortly after the First World War.

By the seventies, SSIH had become Switzerland's number one producer of finished watches and number three in the world. Coming out triumphant from the 1975 recession, the two Swiss giants SSIH and ASUAG (House of brands such as Longines, Rado and Swatch) merged to form the Holding ASUAG-SSIH in 1983. Barely two years later, was the holding company taken over by Nicolas Hayek, who renamed it as SMH. In 1998, the company was christened once again as The Swatch Group.

In addition there are several features that help make a watch water-resistant. The most important is the gaskets, or 0 rings-made of rubber, nylon or Teflon which form watertight seals at the joints where the crystal, case back and crown meet the watch case. if the watch is a chronograph, the chronograph pushers will also have gaskets.

The thickness and material of the case is also a big factor in determining whether a watch can safely be worn underwater. The case must be sturdy enough to withstand pressure without caving in. In general, this means steel or titanium case or a steel case plated with gold, manufacturers say. Solid gold cases can be water resistant provided they are sufficiently thick.

NASA supplied each of the Apollo astronauts with a standard issue omega Speed master Professional manual-wind wristwatch together with Velcro strap. The omega Speed master Professional Chronograph was the first watch to be worn on the Moon, and is a NASA favorite. So also the glamour industry too eying omega watches in high esteem.

In addition, omega has often been one of the best Official timekeepers for the Olympics since the 1932 Summer Olympiad. The same tradition follows for both the 2006 Winter Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics in Germany.

Top 10 Diamond Shapes - Which Will You Choose?

Thursday, October 19, 2006

Although the round diamond shape is the most popular shape of all there are many fascinating and beautiful alternatives.

Use this list to familiarize yourself with the top 10 diamond shapes before deciding to buy a diamond ring. For illustrated examples of all these shapes see the Diamond Ring Tutorial in the resource box.

Asscher

Named after the Asscher brothers of Holland at the turn of the 20th century, this square diamond shape has an almost octagonal appeal.

Cushion

If you want to be a little different, this is the shape for you. Cushion shaped diamonds can be almost square or slightly elongated giving a soft pillow shape.

Emerald

Emerald shapes are normally cut to a rectangular outline but some can be cut more square. Get advice from the supplier regarding length to width ratios.

Heart

Regarded by many as the most romantic of all the shapes, skilled cutting is necessary to maintain the diamond's brilliance due to the complexity of the shape.

Marquise

If you want to flatter the finger and make it appear longer choose the Marquise. It’s shape is elongated with tapering points at the ends.

Oval

Another shape to flatter and accentuate a slender finger. Being similar to the Round shape, it has brilliance and fire.

Pear

This teardrop shape is regarded by many as very feminine. The cut is very important with a Pear shape so the light is reflected evenly, especially at the point.

Princess

This shape has the distinction of being the most popular next to the Round shape. It boasts clean, dazzling, square lines.

Radiant

The radiant shape is similar to the Princess but can be more rectangular. It combines the classic Emerald cut with Round.

Round

By far this is the most popular shape of all. The 306 degree symmetrical shape contributes to the dazzling brilliance of this shape. It suits almost every kind of mounting.

For more information on all these shapes plus the four c’s – cut, clarity, color, carat, consult the tutorial listed below:

A Diamond Eternity Ring for Keeps

Synonymous with diamonds is the word “forever.” This is basically why most people—especially couples—choose this as a symbol of their affection and eternal love for their partner by putting it in a ring or any other jewelry. Unless stolen or lost, real diamonds are meant to stand the test of time and generations. No wonder these are considered as the most expensive mineral used as a gem.

For men, a pair or two of jewelry is enough. But when it comes to women, it is altogether a different story. Most of the time, men have to contend in buying the engagement or wedding ring alone to keep some element of surprise while women would want to have a companion while choosing a ring to get better perspectives.

A ring to stand the test of time

If there were one kind of ring that exemplifies eternal sparkle and beauty, that would be the diamond eternity ring. Long before, diamond eternity rings were already described as the as the best “dress” or the “best wedding ring” because its endless or eternal loop is great symbol of love that would last for eternity.

Generally, all diamond eternity rings are set with a stone or diamond set. These are categorized as a “full eternityring—that has stones set completely around the shank—and a “half eternityring—which has stones set partially around the shank. Today, many eternity rings come multi-stranded or plaited, among other themes or designs.

If you are looking forward to getting a diamond eternity ring—whether as a wedding or engagement, for purely personal satisfaction, or a major investment—take note of its special characteristics aside from carefully examining the 4Cs—the cut, clarity, color, and carat weight.

In a jewelry store, two diamonds may look alike but they can be very different and just like two diamonds of equal size that have very different values. The four qualities of a diamond namely color, clarity, cut and carat weight determine the real value of the gem you are looking for. These standards are also applicable to most gemstones.

Usually, a full diamond eternity ring costs twice or thrice as much than the half eternity because it has more diamonds. More and more people—especially women—focus in buying half diamond eternity rings that have stones concentrated in the “head” or front of the ring because they can easily be sized compared to full eternity rings, more comfortable to wear, and less expensive.

Bear in mind that square, oblong and round stones are excellent choices for diamond eternity rings because of its continuity.

Don’t forget to compare prices. diamond eternity rings need not always be expensive. If you have found a design that you really admire in a specific jewelry store or an online jeweler, try looking in other stores because they might be selling the same product with the same specifications for a lesser price. Make sure that you at least have a minor comparison of prices from several different jewelers before you finally buy that princess cut diamond engagement ring.

Check and double-check the bill of sale carefully. After buying your dream diamond eternity ring, make sure that everything about the ring is fully described in written from and explained to you by the jeweler.

The Beauty of Black Tahitian Pearls

The Pacific Ocean is home to the black-lipped oysters that produce large tahitian pearls. The ocean waters are warm, and this allows the oysters to grow much larger than in other areas, thus producing larger pearls. tahitian oysters are farmed in large sheltered lagoons that are kept free of pollution and overcrowding. Water temperatures and nutritional levels, as well as environmental and biological conditions are monitored carefully. These well cared for oysters are responsible for producing the beautiful tahitian pearls.

How a tahitian pearl is formed

Aragonite, which is a form of calcium carbonate, is secreted by the pearl oyster. This substance coats the inside of the oyster shell and produces the “mother-of-pearl” lining. It also forms the layers of the pearl. The oyster can produce aragonite secretions up to four times a day with each secretion forming another layer. The layers are about one micron or 0.001mm thick. tahitian oyster live for about two years which means they produce up to about two thousand layers; more than most other pearls. The light passes through these multiple microscopic layers and is reflected and refracted to produce a shimmering effect. This shimmering creates magnificent colors which seem to travel and move throughout the pearl. This is part of what makes the tahitian pearl so unique.

Criteria

pearls are graded based on certain criteria. These are:

- Size – the expensive pearls are the larger ones. The Robert Wan Pearl is the largest tahitian Pearl and it measured over 20.92mm or 13/16 of an inch in diameter. tahitian pearls usually measure between 9mm and 14mm and are considerably larger than Chinese or Japanese pearls.

- Pearl Thickness - layers surrounding the nucleus.

- Shape - round pearls are the most sought after and cannot vary more than 2% from being perfectly spherical. tahitian pearls can also be semi-round and semi-baroque.

- Surface Purity - surface imperfections on the pearl.

- Quality - the luster and the imperfections of the pearl.

- Brilliance - the orient and the luster of the pearl. The orient, which is the shimmering quality of the pearl, is very noticeable in tahitian pearls.

Colors

Although tahitian pearls are naturally black, they are very unique in their coloration. The pearls highlights can be silver and even gold. The overtones on a tahitian pearl can be blue, purple and even green. The variations in the colors of the pearls make very striking jewelry when combined with other gemstones and metals.

The Many Beautiful Colors of Topaz

topaz is a gem that has a long history of being associated with the sun. This is because the colors of a sunrise or sunset are captured in this gem. Egyptians thought that wearing an amulet or pendant of topaz provided protection by the sun god Ra to the wearer. The Romans associated topaz with the sun god Jupiter, and felt that topaz was a powerful bringer of good fortune and positive events.

Many cultures historically believed that wearing topaz allows you to be clear of vision and thought, and to be able to ward off evil spells or enchantments. Historically it was also believed to give the wearer almost super-human strengths and abilities when in emergency or crisis situations. In ancient times many nobles wore topaz, as it was believe to change color when in the presence of poison. They often wore it in rings and placed their hands over their food or drink to see if it had been meddled with. topaz was also thought to gain strength with the phases of the moon, and thought to cure some diseases and conditions such as insomnia, respiratory problems and some blood disorders.

In more modern tradition, topaz is the birthstone for those born in the month of November. While a very hard stone, it can be split fairly easily if hit at the right angle.

Colors

topaz naturally comes in many different colors. The most recognized color of topaz is an amber or gold color, with highlights of peach, tans, browns or shades of orange. A cognac color of topaz is slightly darker than the amber shade, and tends to have more of the brown highlights.

The largest topaz is the Braganza topaz. It is found in set in the Portuguese Crown, and was originally thought to be a large diamond. This topaz, while called white topaz, is really colorless and is the most common type, found in China, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Nigeria and India.

Pink topaz occurs naturally in Pakistan and Russia, and is occasionally found in other locations. Pink topaz is usually pale pink; anything that is described as “hot pink” or “bright pink” is artificially treated or heated to produce the enhanced color. Heating some shades of pink topaz will remove the orange color and will leave a lavender colored gem.

Brown, red, dark pink, yellow, orange and sherry colored topaz are found naturally in Brazil and Sri Lanka. Heating and enhancing of these different naturally occurring colors can lead to a wide variety of darker shades and truly unique colors.

Pale topaz can be irradiated in a lab to create a blue topaz. The color of this gem is very pale to medium blue, and is not a dark blue color. The pale topaz needed to make a blue topaz is found in Sri Lanka, China, Brazil and Nigeria.

In 1998, gemologists began surface-enhancing pale topaz to create a green topaz. This topaz ranges in color from a leaf green to an emerald green. Again, this is not a naturally occurring gem and requires surface-enhancement to produce the color.

When to Wear Jewelry Watches

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Occassions

A jewelry watch simply should not be worn to the beach, at the tennis courts, or at the unified school district where you're scheduled to hand your donation. Jewelry watches are reserved for cocktail parties, charity balls, and at Christie's auctions.

This is because jewelry watches are a statement of style and taste, and part of that is knowing when to accessorize appropriately. If your jewelry watch is minimally studded with precious stones, the more versatile it becomes, and you can even wear it to the boardroom.

Prices

Jewelry watches are understandably expensive (from $5,000 to upwards of $20,000) because it takes time to find and match precious stones for your timepiece – these stones have to perfectly fit the design, need to be of the same clarity, color, and size, and are painstakingly handcrafted by artisans onto the watch.

How to Choose?

If you're on the lookout for jewelry watches, your best bets would be the classics from the more popular name brands such as Rolex and Omega. If you aren't looking to spend too much on your first jewelry watch, at least look for either a vintage model, which may give the impression that you're a collector and that you chose that particular model because you searched far and wide for it, or find a piece that is freshly out in the market.

Pre-Owned Watches

Another alternative would be to purchase a pre-owned jewelry watch that is classified as a "classic." A few examples of these jewelry watches are: models from the Christian Dior Mother-of-Pearl series or the Raymond Weil Parsifal for ladies, and the Breguet Classique for men. The Piaget Citea for ladies is also a good choice. It evokes understated elegance with its round yellow gold case, gold strap, and a simple yet stunning diamond-studded bezel.

White Gold

White gold is also an attractive alternative, such as the models in the Patek Philippe Twenty-4 Series. Its hands are set with a luminous coating to enable the owner to read the time in the dark. It is diamond-studded at the sides and a single-faceted diamond, approximately 0.05 carats, is set on the crown for a low-key but stylish effect.

A rose gold version of this model comes in a new dial color – Chocolate Dream – a warm and classy brown dial that enhances the case's soft tone. The dials of both the rose gold and white gold editions are also set with diamonds that mark the hours, while gold roman numerals at 6 and 12 o'clock complete the look. The cases have a magnificent curved profile set onto hefty, solid bracelets whose clasps are decorated with the trademark Calatrava cross.

This attractive jewelry watch can set you back about $15,000 to $18,000, which is perhaps a good figure to start with when looking for a serious jewelry watch. However, the jewelry watch you choose doesn't have to be ostentatious to be impressive. Choose a style that you'll feel comfortable with. For jewelry watches, more may not necessarily be better.

Hairstyles of Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston, the well known actress, has many famous hairstyles. Jennifer Aniston is best known for her role on the TV show, Friends, as the much loved character Rachel. Rachel was fun loving, cute, sexy, lovable, and actually quite dingy. She was a character that reached out to the hearts of many of us for many seasons.

Each year Jennifer Aniston fans would wait with great anticipation for the fall season of Friends to begin. What great new hairstyle would Jennifer be wearing this season. Would she have a long or short hairstyle, wavy or straight hairstyle? Whatever hairstyle Jennifer had, it was sure to be a hit. Women from all over would be heading to the hair salon for a Jennifer Aniston hairstyle makeover.

The famous “Rachel cut” was an all time favorite. This hairstyle was a huge trendsetter. This cut framed the face and was shorter at the crown and longer around her face. This cut gave her height on the top of her head while still giving her the look of longer hair. The bottom of her hair was shag cut with a razor.

Jennifer with long hair would sometimes have big romantic curls. These were created by blow drying with a big round brush and then using a big curling iron to make lots of big soft curls. Then softly brush to blend.

One of Jennifer Aniston’s great fun looks is just a bunch of tousled waves. This is a great look for her with long hair. This look is easily achieved by blow drying with a round brush and then once hair is dry, take random sections of hair and wrap it around the outside of a curling iron. Then gently brush through using a vent brush to achieve tousled waves all over.

Jennifer Aniston’s favorite trademark look has to be her sleek and shiny sedu hairstyle. For her, this hairstyle is just glassy straight and parted off center. She has fine hair, although a lot of it and it straightens easily by blow drying with a round brush.

Short hair is rarely seen on Jennifer Aniston. This is apparently not one of her favorite hairstyles although she looks great in it just like all the others. Short hair for her was shoulder length, straight, all one length, and cut into a bob.

Which ever Jennifer Aniston hairstyle is your favorite, you can find information about them here. Just check out the sources on this page and have fun.

Replica handbags have become extremely popular over the years. Those who want the look and feel of a designer handbag, but do not want to pay thousands of dollars for one, have found a real treasure in replica designer handbags. Here's a quick guide to replica handbags and how they are taking the handbag market by storm.

Types of Replica Handbags

Whether it's a replica Gucci handbag or a replica Chloe handbag, thousands of these items are being sold online and off. There are all types of replica handbags from a variety of famous designers. To name a few, there are Fendi replica handbags, replica Chanel handbags, replica Gucci handbags, Louis Vuitton replica handbags and many more! These are called "handbag knockoffs" because they are designed to look and feel just like the real thing.

Pricing for Replica Handbags

Don't be misled into thinking that replica designer handbags are cheaply priced. On the contrary, they can still be expensive, just not as expensive as the real thing. For instance, a replica Gucci handbag might be priced between $200 and $300. That's not pocket change by any means. However, authentic Gucci handbags are priced much higher, from $800 up. So, deciding to buy a replica handbag is often due to the major price differences.

Great for Extravagant Outings

Replica handbags are wonderful for extravagant outings such as black tie events, special dinner occasions, formal balls, proms, weddings, ceremonies, banquets, etc. You can take a replica handbag along to appear just as stunning as you would with an authentic bag!

Replica Handbags as Gifts

Maybe you'd like to spend a few hundred dollars to buy a gift for your loved one. Maybe the gift is for your mother on Mother's Day or for your sister or favorite aunt during the holidays. What woman wouldn't adore a replica handbag? If you can't buy an authentic handbag, buy a replica Chloe handbag or Fendi replica handbag as a gift. It will be a gift to remember!

Where to Find Replica Handbags

Finding replica handbags has never been easier. Now you can shop online to find all brands of replica designer handbags at affordable prices. Only be sure the website is actually offering true replicas. With an online retailer, you can shop from your own home and take time to compare different replica brands. One website alone might offer a variety of replica handbag brands such as replica Chanel handbags, Fendi replica handbags, replica Chloe handbags and many others.

Use the guide above along with your online resources to find the replica handbag that's right for you!

When it comes to plus size bras, you may have no real idea what your true size is. In the US, there are a considerable amount of women that wear the wrong size bra. Not only will you feel more comfortable but you will also look better in the clothing that you wear. Plus size or not, you are sure to benefit from a good measuring.

Determining Bra Size

The first thing we want to do is to determine your plus size bra’s size. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Measure around your frame first. To do this, you will want to use a measuring tape to measure around your ribcage, without including any breast tissue in this measurement. Write this number down.

  2. Add five to this number to determine bra size. For odd numbers, round your number up.

  3. Now, measure your body around at the fullest part of your breasts. You will want to be wearing the most comfortable bra you have for this measurement. Keep the tape measure level around your body. Write your number down.

  4. Finally, take this number and subtract the bra size number from it. Determine what your cup size is using these numbers.

Now that you know what the right size for your bra is, you can find the perfect, sexy plus size bras for you to select from. Bras in large size do not have to be uncomfortable or ugly for that matter. You can find a wide selection of plus size choices offered to you throughout the web. In fact, now that you have the right plus size, you can find comfortable large size bras that are well fitting, offer just the right support and make you look nothing short of amazing.

You can select from bras that are in various colors and styles. Today, designers are offering more and more selection to choose from. You can find sexy plus size bras with lace made of satin or silk. You can also find form fitting pieces that will give support and help to tuck away those unforgiving areas that you hate. There are those that offer help when you have too large of a breast as well to help provide support. There is no shortage of options available and plus sizes go well up there even beyond that chart.

After you calculate bra size, your world of plus size will get better. Now that you know what will really fit you well, you can easily find the best pieces for you. And, what that does is truly amazing. Your clothing will fit better and you will look beautiful in them. Some may even tell you that you look thinner or perhaps sexier and they will want to know what you did differently.

How Do I Choose A Plus Size Dress for a Special Occasion?

Are you looking for plus size special occasion dresses? If so, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. First you visit your local dress shops only to become discouraged. Although you thought you knew your size, nothing seems to fit well. Then, the things that you find in larger, plus sizes just do not seem to feel right. This can become rather troublesome as well.

How can you find the look and feel that you want? When it comes to finding plus size wedding gowns, plus size cocktail dresses or just the perfect special occasion plus size suits, insure that you give yourself all of the things you need to look amazing.

Start With Sizing

The first thing to do to find the perfect plus size special occasion dresses is to have your body sized. Visit a professional and have them take your measurements down. This is important as when you visit retailer’s websites they will offer a sizing chart for you to look at, but if you do not know the size of your hips or your bust, you are not going to be able to select correctly right away. Since many manufacturers offer sizes that are smaller than standard shirt or pant sizes, it is essential to know your measurements before getting started with finding the perfect special occasion plus size dress.

Look At Your Frame

You will then want to look for at your own body for the right special occasion dress for plus size woman needs. Where your problem areas are and what area of your body would you like to enhance? When you learn this, you can then look for a dress that offers just the right look. If you are after a plus size wedding gown, for example, is an A line something that is appealing to you and your body’s frame? What is? You can always find dresses that enhance a good part of your body, like the breasts or the shoulders and this can help to draw attention away from those areas that are not so flattering to you.

Determine Need

Don’t forget to look at the formality of the plus size suits or special occasion plus size dress you need. For example, if you need a plus size mother of the bride dresses to consider, then you will want to insure that you pick a style and color that works for the wedding celebration rather than something that is hindering to the wedding reception.

When it comes to finding just the right special occasion dress for a plus size woman, do not stop looking at your options until you find just what it is that is appealing to you. One of the most important factors to consider is your ability to find something that you love.

When you wear something you love, you will feel good about yourself and then look even more amazing.

Go for sexy. Go for elegant. Whatever it is that you are after, the perfect plus size special occasion dresses are available to fit your needs.

Extend Your Budget with Clothing Capsules

Clothing capsules offer a clever way to extend your wardrobe and do a lot with a little. By using the clothes you already have in new and different combinations, you give yourself lots of options without buying anything new. In fact, once you understand how clothing capsules work, you can build your wardrobe around them and give yourself tons of outfits -- and stop wasting money on impulse items that don't go with anything else you own.

The first thing you need to do is remember when planning clothing capsules is that you CAN mix and match your clothes. Often, we get in such a rut that we forget that there's more than one way of doing things. Once you break out of that way of thinking and try different things, you'll be amazed as what you can do.

So what's a clothing capsule?

A clothing capsule is a group of 5-12 pieces (jacket, skirt, slacks, etc.) that work in combination with each other in color, style, or mood. Black pants with a leapored print scarf, for example, or a white skirt with a navy and white top.

If you always wear certain tops with certain bottoms or always wear the same jewelry with a certain dress, realizing that you can wear those tried-and-true combos in different ways becomes very liberating. It also allows you to do a lot more with your wardrobe, enabling you to buy less, save more, and still look great all the time.

While there are no set rules, here are some general guidelines for building wardrobe capsules:

*Solids mix more easily than prints.

*Prints can bridge two completely different solids.

*Simple, untrimmed styles are more versatile and become less dated.

*Each piece should be in your most flattering color palette and fit both your shape and your clothing personality. Don't buy items that don't fit or make you look good.

*Avoid trendy styles. What's "in" this year will be "out" next year and you'll be out the cash. Invest in classic styles instead to get more wear out of your clothes.

Now I know from experience that some women are really good at mixing and matching while others need a little more help. Arrange your closet for easy access by keeping all the pants together, all the jackets together, all the skirts together, etc., by color, so that you can see at a glance what you have to work with.

Study catalogs and window displays for ideas. Make note of how a jacket might be worn a little differently or how an accessory might be worn in a new way. It doesn't take a lot.
To re-emphasize: Start building your capsules with what you have. Often, the first inclination is to go run buy something new. It's not necessary. See what you have, see what you need, and add pieces as your budget allows.

In the meantime, experiment with what you have. Write down the combinations if necessary. You'll get the hang of this in no time.

Once you unlock your creativity by looking at your wardrobe every which way, you'll soon find yourself doing the same with other aspects of your life, like your home, your job, problem solving, etc. When you do, you'll be delighted at what your imagination can come up with. In the words of fashion designer Jil Sander, "Think more, buy less."

Why Purchase Designer Shoes Online

In this first article that I have written, I explain to you why it is a good idea to look to the internet for purchasing a pair of designer shoes or any other designer item that you are looking for.

Certainly you will discover once you starting search the internet just how many people have purchased such items as designer shoes at a lower price than that they would pay in a shop. Over the last few years eBay has become one of the biggest household names where millions of people have become registered users and are benefiting from the large amount of auctions that are happening on the site every day.

One store that sells women’s shoes was recently reported as being one of the largest stores on the eBay site and whether you search for an eBay store or an auction listing you will discover just how many women’s shoes are available. You will discover page upon page of either new or nearly new women’s shoes available on the site.

The biggest thing about shopping for designer shoes online is the price that you will pay. Although some of the online stores that ask a high price for the products that they are selling they will still be very competitive. In fact you may find the price being charged for designer footwear is too high and this is possibly where eBay can come to your rescue.

Certainly the selling of designer items on eBay has generally become quite profitable, but at the end of the day it really does come down to what you are willing to pay.

You will normally find that designer items being sold on eBay normally sell for less than their retail price.

The options available to you for searching through eBay auctions makes it easier for you to get a pair of designers shoes at the last minute for a lot less than you would be in a retail outlet.

A lot of the top internet shoe stores are now offering designer shoes at reasonable prices so over the last few years have had more just of being able to purchase a pair of high fashion labeled from such people as Dior, Gucci, Prada and Jimmy Choo to name but a few. This is accomplished because eBay are able to offer the medium where women’s designer shoes can be sold at heavily discounted prices.

Even though there is still some competition with regard to the prices being paid on eBay for designer shoes the buyers are still bidding and the demand for this item is still strong. It is quite common when competing on price in respect of certain items that sellers can completely price themselves out of the market. But because the demand for designer items on eBay is so high many sellers and store owners found on eBay continue to enjoy profitable sales on the many designer items such as shoes etc. that they are selling.

Allison Thompson, who has an invested a large amount of money in shoes and boots over the years and decided to build a site dedicated to designer shoes for all the women out there. If you would like to know more than please visit http://www.shoes.whatshewants.info.

How To Find Unique Handbags That Make A Fashion Statement

While strolling back to work from your lunch break, thinking about the afternoon schedule, you stop and look around. Then you notice that many of the other women walking down the street are carrying the same handbag you are.

This can give you a self conscience feeling that you are just one of the many instead of the confident feeling of thinking for yourself and being your own person. It is almost like going to a party and every one is wearing the same dress you are, even worse, they look better in it than you do.

Making a Statement

A handbag is like shoes or any other accessory; you would like it to make a statement about yourself. Whether it is a playful mood or a more sophisticated night out, you would like your handbag to reflect that feeling.

There are many reasons to choose a bag; one is to follow the latest fashion trend. This can be fun if you have the resources and shops to keep up with it. But eventually, you will wind up with a pile of outdated handbags you can no longer use. Other reasons are to follow the fashion of an admired celebrity, or an admired designer. But these can also leave you feeling cold and unsatisfied.

Finding Your Perfect Bag

There is the perfect bag out there for you. It may take time to find it, but it should be functional as well as fashionable. With the right bag that says "look at me" it can make a statement about the owner that words can not. It is a look and feeling that all women know when they have a well put together ensemble. That perfect unique bag for you is out there waiting for you and the hunt is on.

The first thing you need to do is to decide on material. Whether you like fabric, leather, or even macrame, knowing what type of material can help narrow the search. The next question is size. The question of size can be difficult, small handbags are very cute, but will they hold everything you need?

You can answer these questions with the adage "form follows function" find the bag you like then make it work. There is also the question of style, do you follow the new styles or do you choose something more classic so the look will last for some time.

Discussing these issues with a salesperson can help you find the perfect unique bag you have been searching for. But don't forget about the odd places to find a unique handbag, vintage clothing stores or craft fairs can be fun places to find the bag that says this is me.

Leather Bags

Bags may be made from different types of leather such as cow hides, snake skin, crocodile skin, alligator skin, stingray skin, kangaroo skin, fish skin etc. These leather bags are of good quality, smooth, good color tan and a richness look. They are durable, lasting, simple and easy to maintain. A leather bag gives you a classical touch when you hold it or hang it on your shoulder. Bags of other material will never give you the extra look and care as that of leather bags. Various printed leather bags are also available in the market. These printed types are used as a copy of genuine leather bags. The prices of these bags are reasonable.

Wind and rain are the main enemies of leather goods. But today, there are many ways to protect them from wind and rain. Leather bags need extra care and protection which can extend their life with you gracefully. Makeup sets, foods, or any other oil-based products inside these bags may stain them. When you are not using the leather bag; it can be stored in a protective cloth container instead of plastic container. Plastic container reduces the original finish and color of the leather bags. Clean the leather bags with a soft clammy cloth and to maintain the shining of your leather bag use a branded leather shiner.

These leather bags are considered a symbol of fashion for both men and women, more importantly, the women. A leather bag has an important place in the wardrobe and is considered an international rage in the fashion world.

Look Cool and Drive Safely with Motorcycle Sun Glasses

Motorbike riding is not exactly the safest way to travel. That is why laws require motorcyclists to have insurance and to wear helmets. Although motorcycle sun glasses are not really required by law, a responsible rider should still make it a point to wear a pair since dust, debris and other minute objects can cause a really serious accident.

Helmets are used to protect motorcyclists from the worst head injuries if an accident occurs, but the device does not completely protect riders' eyes from small materials carried by the wind that can cause damage to the eyes or momentarily hinder a rider's sight. That is why riders are advised to wear motorcycle sun glasses under their helmets as added protection, not only against dust and debris carried by the wind but also against the ultraviolet rays of the sun.

When it comes to motorbike sunglasses, manufacturers offer various designs that will not make a biker sorry that he or she has decided to wear a pair. These sunglasses rival other types of sunglasses that are worn by some as part of their fashion ensemble. Brand names like Arnette, Harley Davidson, Wiley X, Bolle, Serengeti, Orange County Choppers, Bobster, Body Specs and ESS all offer the most fashionable sunglasses designs for motorbike riders.

Most of these sunglasses have interchangeable lenses so that consumers can use them during the night and also at daytime. Light adjusting lenses are also quite common. Brands with light-adjusting ability darken when the sun is shining too brightly and adjust to a clearer shade in overcast days. Polycarbonate lenses are also favorites among bikers since these types are known to have high capabilities when it comes to blocking the sun's ultraviolet rays. When it comes to frames, models made of plastic or acetate are much better for motorcyclists since they are less likely to hinder the process of putting them on and removing them after.

When looking for sunglasses, motorbikers should choose models that are snug-fitting. They can even opt for goggles-like glasses to make sure that they stay in place even during rigorous riding. It is also important that the wearer does not feel any discomfort while wearing them. Models with comfortable nose pads and flexible frames that do not press too tightly on the temples are riders' best bets.

Motorcycle sun glasses can cost between $45 and $200, but the added protection that they can provide will be worth the money, not to mention the trendy and cool designs that go with these eyepieces. For motorcyclists, shelling a few more dollars might make the difference between a safe ride and a troublesome accident. It is always a wise move to put in a little more investment when it comes to one's physical safety.

Jewelry from 3000 BC Egypt to the 21st Century

Sunday, April 23, 2006
Egypt

The use of gold jewelry can be dated back to Egypt 3000 BC. Gold was the preferred metal for jewelry making during ancient times. It was rare, it was easy to work with, and it never tarnished.

Magnificent bracelets, pendants, necklaces, rings, armlets, earrings, collars, and head ornaments were all produced in ancient Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs. In 1922 Howard Carter's excavations led to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and many gold artifacts, all showing the art work of ancient Egypt.

Greece

In ancient Greece, gold beads in the shape of shells, flowers and beetles were very common. In Northern Greece beautiful necklaces and earrings have been excavated from burial.

By 300 BC the Greeks were using gems such as emeralds, garnets, amethysts and pearls. They also created colored glass stones and enamel stones. Carved agate cameos and gold filigree work were widely made.

Italy

The Italian Etruscans produced granulated textured gold work. They made very large, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. They were also known for producing hollow gold pendants that were filled with perfume. Even today the Italians are still known for the quality gold jewelry.

Rome

The Romans used 18 and 24 carat gold for their coins. Coinage gold was readily available so it was popular with craftsmen for decorative jewelry. Over 2000 years ago the Romans were using sapphires, emeralds, garnets, and amber in their jewelry. Europe.

During the 13th century the Medieval Sumptuary Laws were enacted which put a cap on luxurious jewelry and clothing. The town folk of France, banned from wearing girdles made from pearls or any other gemstone.

They were also banged from wearing gold or silver. Similar laws existed in England banning artisans from wearing gold and silver. These laws show how fine jewelry had spread beyond nobility to the town folk.

For as long as mankind has existed gems and jewels have been used as token of ones love for another. While many pieces of jewelry existed adorned with fine gems and made from precious metals, there was also some very good fake jewelry.

True gemstones and pearls originated in the east and they were bought mainly by the Italians. The Italian merchants then sold the jewelry to the Europeans.

High quality glass imitations were often used and sold with the intent to deceive. These high quality glass stones were often used in the Royal funeral robes and in children's jewelry.

Valued more than gemstones, were the flawless, round, natural white pearls. South India provided some of the finest pearls. The Italians were able to make quality imitation glass gems and pearls that could only be identified by a gemologist.

There is historical proof that recipes for false pearls existed as far back as 1300. White powdered glass was mixed with albumen and snail slime to produce imitation pearls.

Earrings and Dress Jewelry

During the 17th century woman always wore earrings, whether they were dressed or undressed. It was very acceptable to wear faux pearls and paste gem earrings during the day saving fine diamond jewelry and gem jewelry for evening attire.

Dress ornamentation decreased in size. Sleeves or skirts were often decorated with matching brooches.

During the 16th it was very fashionable to wear large quantities of pearls. Both jewelry to clothing accessories were adorned with pearls.

During the 17th century Jaquin of Paris patented a method of making fake pearls. Hollow blown glass balls were coated with varnish mixed with iridescent ground fish scales. The hollow balls were then filled with wax to strengthen them. This discovery made Paris the main producer of faux pearls for well over 200 years.

Paste is a compound of glass containing white lead oxide and potash. Paste jewelry was very common in the later part of the 17th century. The highest quality and most long lasting paste jewelry was produced after 1734 by Georges Strass.

Paris lead the production of faux gems [paste] and faux pearls. Just about any kind of fake gem could be made, including fake opals.

After 1760 the production of fake jewelery spread to London and to Birmingham. During the industrial revolution steel was produced in large quantities so it was easily available. It was ues for setting marcasite and jasper ware cameos. Glass and Wedgwood porcelain paste cameos were made in English factories and were also very popular.

The fashion from this era also included ornate shoe buckles of paste, steel and tin, elaborate paste jewel buttons, as well as semi precious for day wear.

Empire Jewelry

In 1804 Napoleon emerged as Emperor of France, resulting in a revival of jewelry and fashion as a new court of pomp. 'Joailliers' worked fine jewelry and 'bijoutiers' used less precious materials.

The members of the new French imperial family had the former French royal family gems re-set into the latest neo-classical style. The new trends soon found their way to Europe, particularly England. The main influence for design was the Greek and Roman.

Parures and Cameos

Parures were a matching suite of coordinating precious gems which could include a necklace, a comb, a tiara, a diadem, a bandeau, a pair of bracelets, pins, rings, drop earrings or and cluster stud earrings and possibly a belt clasp.

A full parure consisted of a minimum of four pieces. A demi parure consisted of three or less pieces. Both Josephine and Napoleon's second wife had magnificent parures.

Once Napoleon's cameo decorated coronation crown was seen, cameos became the rage. Cameos were carved from hard stone, conch shells and even from Wedgwood porcelain.

Victorian Jewelry

In 1837 when Queen Victoria came to the throne jewelry was romantic and nationalistic. It focused on European folk art, which later influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement. Until mid century most western jewelry came from Europe, with some jewelry being produced in North America and Australia.

Mass production of mid Victorian jewelry in Birmingham, Germany and Providence, Rhode Island resulted in lower jewelry standards. Victorian women rebelled when they saw some the poor quality of much of this machine made jewelry.

Woman rebelled by wearing no jewelry at all, or buying from the emerging artist craftsman. Some jewelers like Tiffany recognized a niche market and began to make fine jewelry of a very high standard, opening shops in main European cities.

Mourning Jewelry

During the Victorian era mourning jewelry was very fashionable. The initial months of mourning were unadorned by jewelry of any kind. As the mourning rituals increased, mourning jewelry developed as a fashion item. Queen Victorian wore a great deal of jet mourning jewelry after Prince Albert’s death.

Jet from Whitby, North of England was set into mourning pieces. All types of material that were black were used and almost all included a lock of the dead loved one's hair. Hair was also plaited, braided or twisted very tightly until it became hard and thread like.

Arts and Crafts Jewelry

During the 1870s the Arts and Crafts movement evolved as a reaction to mass produced shoddy goods and inferior machine made products which were a result of the industrial revolution.

William Morris and John Ruskin were both leaders of the arts and crafts movement in England. They promoted simple Arts and Crafts of designs based on floral, primitive or Celtic forms worked as wallpapers, furniture and jewelry.

The polished stones used in Arts and Crafts jewelry gave a medieval, simpler, gentler, tooled hand made look and feel to items.

Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau followed the arts and crafts movement resulting in a new jewelry look. The movement began in Paris and its influence went throughout the Western world. Art nouveau jewelry had curves, sinuous organic lines of romantic and imaginary dreaminess.

It was very ethereal turning into winged bird and flower forms. French, René Lalique was the master goldsmith of the era of Art Nouveau producing exquisite one off pieces. Today, the Art Nouveau style is still admired, sought after, and copied.

Pearls

Various combinations of pearl necklaces come in and out of fashion with regularity so pearls too are a must. Today pearls are still a wardrobe essential. Both faux pearls and cultured pearls are very affordable today.

Since the opening of trade with China in the 1990s, many pearls are imported from China dropping the price to about 1/3 of what it was prior to China entering the market.

The Japanese have suffered disease in their pearl beds as well as facing competition and are finding it hard to compete with China's prices.

Pearl necklaces and pearl earrings can lift a complexion and bring light and radiance to the face taking years off a woman whatever her age. They have been a wardrobe staple for centuries, and a wedding attire tradition.

Cultured pearls have become very affordable, and faux pearls are very cheap and the quality can be excellent. Currently Pearls are a very “hot” fashion statement and with the modern twist of being interspaced on gold wire or floating on special synthetic cord they are essential to the millennium look.

Cocktail Jewelry

During the 1920s Lalique mass produced and designed high quality glass jewelry. Fake, or costume jewellery was sometimes then called cocktail jewelry.

Costume or Cocktail jewelry was greatly influenced by designers such as Coco Chanel, and Elsa Shiparelli as well as a host of other designers. These two designers were particularly known for encouraging clients to mix their fine jewelry and costume jewelry. Both designers offered imagination and fun and both often sported fabulous fakes.

In the late 1930s Napier of the USA was at the forefront of manufacturing fake cocktail jewelry offer glamour and escapism. Today, Napier still produces excellent contemporary costume pieces.

Hollywood Influence

By the 1940s and 1950s American culture was very dominant in Europe. The influence of movie films and the prominence of film stars set the fashion stage for womens make-up, hair and wardrobe.

People wanted copies of outfits and jewelry worn by the actresses. Women believed that the glamour of Hollywood would rub off on them if they dressed and looked like the glamorous Hollywood actresses.

During the Second World War metals were rationed, halting the production of fine jewelry. Quality costume jewelry picked up the now defunct fine jewelry market. Costume jewelry flourished becoming an acceptable alternative to fine jewelry. 1980's Television Influences Jewelry

During the 1980s with the evolution of glitzy television soaps such as Dynasty and Dallas, costume jewelry once again became a “hot” fashion statement. With over 250 million viewers, it didn’t take long for costume jewelry to be reborn.

Glitz and sparkle by day was not only acceptable, it became the norm. Earrings grew to an unbelievable size, as did other pieces of jewelry. By the 1990s this sparkly dazzling jewelry phenomena was dead, replace with tiny real diamond studs or a fine stud pearls.

21st Century Jewelry

For the 21st century women believe a mix is good. Fine jewelry combined with costume jewelry are wardrobe essentials. The sophisticated women of this century know what they want from their jewelry and how to wear it to make their fashion statement.

They recognize that costume jewelry can liven up their wardrobe. The types and quality of costume jewelry has grown enormously. Today one can purchase what is classified as fine costume jewelry which is usually plated at least seven times with 10 22 ct gold.

Swarovski crystal set in gold are common accessories, and cubic zirconium, man’s imitation diamond, can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of real diamonds allowing every women to add diamond styled jewelry to their wardrobe.

Ciro, Adrian Buckley, Butler and Wilson, Swarovski Crystal Jewelry Napier, Joan Rivers, Joan Collins, Christian Dior, California Crystal, Property of A Lady and of course Kenneth J Lane to name just a few continue to produce high quality fashion jewelry for today’s women.
